Basquiat Joins Brooklyn’s Celebrity Path in Central Arts Celebration
Jean-Michel Basquiat—Brooklyn-born, world-renowned, and forever influential—was honored with a permanent place along the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s famed Celebrity Path as part of the Central Brooklyn Arts & Culture Weekend, according to Brooklyn Reporter. The late artist’s engraved paver was unveiled during a special “Welcome Back to Brooklyn” ceremony, recognizing his lasting impact on art and culture.
Also honored was multi-platinum hip-hop artist Fabolous, another cultural force raised in Brooklyn. Both received ceremonial “keys to Brooklyn,” acknowledging their contributions to the borough’s creative legacy.
“Fabolous and Jean-Michel Basquiat have shown the world the best of Brooklyn,” said Borough President Eric Adams. “The sheer genius of their music and art broke ground and touched countless lives. What better way to celebrate their contributions than by placing their names on the Celebrity Path, encircled by the words, ‘The Greatness of Brooklyn Is Its People.’”
The weekend-long festival stretched from Grand Army Plaza to Washington Avenue, offering music, family activities, and cultural programming—all anchored by a deep appreciation for the artists who have shaped Brooklyn’s global identity. Photo: Erica Sherman/Brooklyn Borough President's Office
