THE MAN BEHIND THE MYTH: BRITISH VOGUE ON THE JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT DOCUMENTARY
We spoke with Funmi Fetto for British Vogue's October 2026 issue about Jean-Michel Basquiat, the documentary we co-produced with directors Quinn Whitney Wilson and Viridiana Lieberman. We talked about growing up with our brother and what losing him did to our family.
As Jeanine said: "I hope people will see this film and see him from a different perspective. To see him as a brother, a son and someone who was just a great human being."
Much of the film comes from our own archive. Home movies of the three of us playing in a New York park in the 1960s. Our father rocking Jean-Michel as a baby on our parents' bed. Years later, the two of them in Hawaii, where Jean-Michel played tennis in moccasins. His signed membership card to the Brooklyn Museum.
Our mother, Matilde, is a central figure in the film. We've always been protective of her and her right to live privately. It felt like the right place to speak about what she gave Jean-Michel and all of us.
Making the film brought up a lot. It also helped us face our own grief, something we had set aside for a long time while we put our parents first.
As Lisane told Vogue: "He was an amazing brother. He was a great person to talk to, he was generous and he had an incredible heart."
